About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant Belmont neighborhood of Portland, Coquine is a standout destination for lovers of New American cuisine who seek a dining experience that is both intimate and delightfully refined. This restaurant masterfully blends seasonal ingredients with inventive techniques to craft dishes that feel familiar yet wonderfully adventurous, elevating every meal into a memorable occasion.

The charm of Coquine begins with its inviting ambiance—warm, cozy, and reminiscent of an old-world bistro where genuine hospitality reigns. From the moment you step inside, there’s a comforting ritual-like quality to the service, as attentive staff anticipate your needs with gracious elegance—a detail many longtime patrons, like Paula Villegas, have thoroughly appreciated. It’s a place where the ambiance encourages you to slow down, savor, and truly connect with the food and company.

Coquine's menu celebrates a curated selection of dishes that showcase the depth and diversity of New American cooking. Imagine starting with a half dozen raw oysters, each jewel-like morsel enhanced by the intriguing brightness of finger lime chile and the umami of colatura, or indulging in caviar perched atop buckwheat blinis paired with crème fraîche—a delicate balance of textures and flavors that tease the palate.

The heartier offerings elevate timeless favorites with a creative twist: their succulent rack of lamb embodies rustic richness, while the lamb osso buco delights with tender, melt-in-your-mouth perfection. Whether you’re drawn to the crispy edges of their yeasted barley waffle, paired with breakfast potatoes and egg in a harmonious blend of comfort and sophistication, or savoring the velvety duck confit, each plate delivers a symphony of taste and texture.

Diners who lean toward lighter fare will find joy in the fluke crudo or the carrot soup adorned with sweet Dungeness crab, dishes that carry fresh, vibrant notes with every bite. Vegetarians are equally catered for, with elegant bites like chickpea socca drizzled with olive oil and impeccably cracked black pepper, perfectly capturing subtlety and depth.

End your meal on a sublime note with desserts that read like an artful poem—whether it’s the toasted sugar pavlova paired with icy cream, the graceful Meyer lemon tart with yogurt mousse and toasted meringue, or brown butter beignets dusted in lemon verbena sugar serving a seasonal crescendo of flavors. Ann Man’s glowing recount of the dessert platter’s chocolate bonbon and cookie, favorites among many, echoes the sweetness that lingers even after the final bite.

What truly sets Coquine apart is the seamless harmony between the exceptional cuisine and the heartfelt service. Guests like Jasmyni Dias speak to a rare warmth—the kind of experience that wraps you up like a comforting embrace on a chilly evening, leaving you feeling nourished in more ways than one. It's not merely a meal but an invitation to savor moments of tenderness, creativity, and connection.

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, enjoying an intimate date, or simply indulging your curiosity for outstanding New American fare, Coquine offers a dining experience that resonates long after the plates are cleared. Its commitment to quality, seasonality, and thoughtful hospitality makes it a cherished gem in Portland’s culinary landscape—one that beckons return visits with the promise of discovery and delight.

I have been in Portland for a minute now and you have to appreciate what it takes to make it as a restaurant. Coquine made it through the pandemic, and came out stronger. The food is phenomenal. If her food was a person, it would be someone you would cuddle up to in a cold winter night and tell secrets to. Somehow after eating, you feel lighter. Tonight was just something else. Shout out to front of the house folks for making this a seamless experience. I wish I could do this again and again

Wonderful romantic and intimate dining experience. Incredibly attentive and caring staff. Felt old school like taking our coats at the door and folding up our napkins if we stood up to use the restroom. We ordered the beet salad, pork osso buco and the duck breast. The salad was kindly split into two despite ordering one order which was a lovely unexpected service style. All were magnificent

Incredible dinner at Coquine. The service was amazing and attentive all night. It’s a quaint restaurant and you’ll love it. Their menu changes every season. We had the cucumber salad, the asparagus, and the half chicken. The chicken takes about 45 to cook and plate be patient. The half chicken is more than enough for 2 people.

Amazing dinner experience. We did family style for 4 of us which gave us the opportunity to try almost everything on the menu. The pork dish was my favorite! And the wine we had was outstanding, especially for the price.

Coquine will go down as one of my Portland favorites. I celebrated my birthday here, and everything was perfect. The food was delicious and creative. You can taste the quality of all of the ingredients. The staff were kind and ready to answer any questions I had. The dessert platter was also so fun! The chocolate bonbon and cookie were my outstanding faves. I will go back to their market to grab and share the experience with others.

Absolutely among the finest meals I've ever had. A small, well-lit place with friedly informative servers - not pretentious at all Excellent recommendations by the head server on wines to accompany the meal. Spouse had the oysters and Sugo Pork over pasta. I had the Salmon Roe and the duck breast. We shared the roasted carrot salad. I couldn't resist the sticky toffee pudding. Celebrating our 10th year in Oregon. The perfect venue - unfussy and delicious. Reservations essential. We dined at 5 PM and got out at 7. Perfection.

For dessert, make sure to ask to see the options on the Candy Tray. Otherwise they may skip showing you and you'll miss out!!! The place is very cute inside. The staff is attentive as well. The cucumber salad was amazing, seriously delicious. Just the aroma when they put the plate down was mouth watering. The bread, again, was amazing. The angolotti was scrumptious. The spinach and walnuts added so much flavor and texture. Wish we'd gotten 2 plates! The roasted chicken was good. It was cooked perfectly, had a crunchy skin and was juicy. The standouts on the plate were the sides though. I would happily eat an entire serving of those sides. Truly five star. For dessert we had the mara des bois strawberries. It was great. We got chocolate chip cookies, but didn't know to ask to see the Tray and missed out on all those options. The table next to us and ourselves were disappointed to see another table get shown the desserts in the Tray after we'd finished our meals. If it was up to my wife, she'd have knocked off a star for that sin. Some of the options on the Tray looked good...
